4 Reasons Why Your HVAC Unit is Overheating
If you have an overheating HVAC system, you want to address this issue as soon as possible. When your HVAC system is overheating, it will not run correctly and may cause your utility bills to skyrocket. As soon as you notice these issues, you will want to call out an HVAC professional to fix the problem. If you do not have your furnace serviced, it may break down to the point where you may have to entirely replace your HVAC system.
1. Refrigerant Leak
If your unit is overheating, the refrigerant levels may not be adequate to cool your home. When the refrigerant is at its correct level, it removes all the air's heat. When you do not have the right refrigerant level in the unit, it will work harder to cool your home. After the unit starts to work harder, it will overheat. The reason your refrigerant is low is usually due to a leak. Never attempt to fix this leak by yourself. You will need a professional to handle the refrigerant properly and determine where the leak is.
2. Clogged Air Filter
Your heating and cooling system has an air filter that protects debris and dust. It would help if you cleaned or replace your air filter at least every three months. When the air filter becomes clogged with dirt and debris, it will not allow air to move through the unit freely. When your heating and air conditioning system does not have enough air moving through it, the components have to work harder. If the components are working hard, this will quickly lead to your unit overheating. To prevent this from happening, make sure that you clean your air filter every three months. You will need to clean it more often if you have a smoker in your home, have many people in your home, or have pets.
3. Faulty Thermostat
If you have a faulty thermostat, it may call for your air conditioner or heat to be on more frequently. If your unit comes on often, this can cause it to overheat. To ensure that your thermostat is working correctly, you will need to make sure it is set at the correct temperature. Pay attention to when it comes on and goes off. If you see an issue with it staying on too long, it is time to call your HVAC technician out to see what the problem is.
4. Dirty Coils
If you have dirty coils in your unit, it can quickly cause your unit to overheat. This is because air cannot adequately move through the coils. When the unit has to work harder, it can cause the components to get very hot. This can cause damage to the entire system. To make sure that your coils are clean, you can use a spray cleaner that is made for coil cleaning. If you do not feel comfortable cleaning your coils or unsure how to do it, you can get your HVAC technician to do it for you.
