The Most Common Furnace and Heating Problems
When the temperatures start to drop throughout the Midwest, thousands of people turn on their furnaces and heating systems for the first time after the summer months expecting their system will be fine. Yet problems and concerning issues often become apparent in the following days and weeks. From a commercial system built for an office building to a custom residential system, all furnaces and heating systems share similar problems that you might experience. Here are the most common furnace problems that can lead to repairs being necessary, and how you can prevent or correct them when they occur:
Furnace Maintenance & Repair Tips
Change the Air Filters
Clogged and dirty air filters can create quite a few problems with your furnace and heating system. Air filters should be replaced, or cleaned if you use reusable filters, once a month and sometimes even every 2-3 weeks during excessive use. The furnace manufacturer’s directions or one of our friendly furnace professionals can show you the correct ones to use and how to change them easily.
Check Your Thermostat
Sometimes a lack of produced heat or problems maintaining temperatures can be attributed to your thermostat. With some models, all you might have to do to fix a problem is to replace the battery. You should also check your thermostat settings occasionally. The fan setting should stay in “Auto” unless instructed otherwise, and the thermostat should be set to “Heat” mode. Setting the thermostat to other settings can result in a blower fan that will not turn off or a system that circulates stale air when you need heat.
Yearly Maintenance
This best to have done between the last days of summer and early part of fall, before you need to turn on and use your heating system regularly. One of our licensed and trained specialists will inspect your furnace and heating system thoroughly. They will prepare the system for the coming season and fix any problems that are beginning to form before they lead to serious breakdowns and repairs during the coming winter months.

- Lack of service & maintenance: This may sound simple, but scheduling annual furnace and heating equipment maintenance help prevent unexpected malfunctions and breakdowns. Skipping service visits and going extended periods of time without regular inspections will decrease efficiency and many serious problems. Call Romano Bros. today if it has been more than a year since your last servicing!
- Strange & loud noises: Rattling, loud pings or bangs, and frequent scraping or squealing noises are not something you should ever hear from your furnace. You can check for anything that is causing an airflow blockage, but if the sound is coming from the furnace or unit, call a professional right away.
- Malfunctioning thermostat: A thermostat that is faulty or far older than your heating system can lead to problems with the fan and keeping the temperature at consistent levels. If the thermostat or the furnace keeps shutting off, or your system is not able to match and hold the selected temperature, then it is probably time to replace the thermostat.
- Dirty filters: Air filters over time will accumulate dirt and dust, and as this happens, it forces your heating system to work harder to circulate air. Continuing to run the system while there is a clogged filter can lead to problems that can be easily avoided by taking a few moments once a month to replace the filter.
- Wear and Tear: It is normal for wear and tear to occur the longer you have been using a furnace and heating system. Seasonal service and maintenance allow for a trained Romano Bros. expert to check for airflow problems, overheating, and control problems that occur as the system get older.
- Pilot or electric ignition problems: A pilot light or ignition that is faulty and struggling to “start” the furnace correctly can make it very difficult to rely on your heating system. Check for drafts, clogs, or dampness around the pilot light.
- Frequent cycling: If your system is consistently turning off and on in short spurts, then you may have a clogged filter. If you know the filter is clean and the thermostat is operating correctly, then this is a sign to call for a repair consultation because there is likely an airflow problem or more serious issue.
- The blower runs continuously: When your system’s blower continues to run, there is often a problem with the limit switch. This should often be left to a professional.
- The furnace does not deliver heat at all: A furnace that is not providing heat altogether may have problems with the gas or power, the thermostat, or the pilot light. You can check the pilot light and test the thermostat, but if there is not an apparent cause then seek professional help.
- The furnace is not providing enough heat: The first thing to check would be the air filter, followed by checking for obvious airflow blockages. This is a common problem with furnaces that are the wrong size for the space they are being used for, and in older units that are starting to lose efficiency.
